Mr. Akshay Bhoir 30 yrs/M was shifted to AIMS Hospital on 17/7/22 from outside hospital where he was being treated for Viral Pneumonia with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS). He was intubated on ventilator support with 100% oxygen requirement and he was in critical condition state. Patient was seen by Dr. Bhanushali and considering the critical condition of patient immediately decision was made to initiate ECMO (Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation). Immediately within 3 hrs ECMO team initiated procedure & started ECMO. Patient was on ECMO for next 35 days. During this period, ventilator was on minimal rest setting which allowed early & quick recovery of lungs. Patient received multiple blood transfusions during this period. ECMO circuit was changed 2 times during this period due to clotting. Patient developed secondary bacterial infections due to immuno-compromised state & was efficiently treated with appropriate antibiotics. Patient lung Condition improved gradually & patient weaned and taken off ECMO after 35 days & further ventilator was continued for 12 days through the tracheostomy removed on 6/9/22 & started on Nasal o2 support. Patient was shifted to ward on 14/9/22. Patient developed Rt. lower leg partial DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) which was treated with Intravenous & oral anticoagulants.
Patient improved in wards with efficient Physiotherapy and O2 support weaned off. Patient was stable & discharged on 20/9/22.
