When to consult a Pulmonologist
Pulmonology is a branch of medicine that deals with diseases and treatments related to the Respiratory System. In case of health conditions like Asthma, Acute/ Chronic Bronchitis, Tuberculosis, Lung Diseases, etc the Pulmonologist should be consulted. In some cases, it also extends to the Cardiovascular system. Some conditions such as pulmonary vascular disease firstly affect the respiratory system but further may affect other areas of body.
Pulmonologists use advanced medical lab tests like CT scan, Ultrasound, Pulse Oximetry Test, Pleural Biopsy, Bronchoscopy, Sleep Study etc to do the diagnosis. As many lung and heart conditions may be related to respiratory system, Pulmonologists often work with Cardiologists during the diagnosis of a patient.
Procedures that Pulmonologist do
The Pulmonologist may perform certain procedures as a part of treatment like Thoracentesis (removing fluid or air from the pleural space around the lungs) and Tracheal or Bronchial stent placement to help open up windpipe or bronchi.
In the case of more serious lung diseases and conditions, the pulmonologist may refer a patient to the Chest Surgeon. The chest surgeon may perform surgeries such as Lung Transplant or Lobectomy to remove a portion of the affected lungs.
