Kidney Stone Surgery

Renal calculi, Nephrolithiasis or Urolithiasis are other names for kidney stones. They are hard deposits made of minerals and salts formed inside the kidneys. Unbalanced diet, excessive body weight, some health conditions and some supplements and medications are the main causes of kidney stones. It can affect any part of urinary tract from kidneys to bladder. Stones are formed when the urine becomes concentrated making minerals crystallize and stick together.

Symptoms of Kidney Stone

Kidney stones generally do not show major symptoms until they move around the kidney or pass into the ureter. If a kidney stone is lodged in the ureter, it may block the flow of urine and in turn causes swelling in the kidneys and spasms in the ureters.

At this stage, some of the following symptoms may be shown in the body -

1. Sharp and severe pain in the side and back, below the ribs.
2. Pain radiating to the lower abdomen and groin
3. The sensation of burning or pain while urinating
4. Pink, brown or red urine
5. Cloudy or foul-odoured urine
6. A constant need to urinate
7. Nausea and vomiting
8. Fever and chills

Kidney Stone Removal

Medical professionals treat kidney stones based on their size, location of deposition and their type. Kidney stones which are small in size and shape usually pass through urine just with medication and no surgical procedure is required.
