How To Take Care Of Premature Babies
Clinically if a baby is born too soon i.e. before 37 weeks of pregnancy, it is called a preterm or premature baby. Premature births in babies cause low birth weight and also involve a very high risk of deaths and permanent and significant impairments in them.
As there are higher chances of health complications in premature babies, they need to be taken care of by very efficient and well trained doctors and nurses and in a well-equipped neonatal care unit setup in the hospital.
NICU specializes in the treatment and care of premature new born babies.
NICUs are headed by specially qualified doctors known as Neonatologists.
Along with specially trained medical staff, NICUs typically require the following instruments or facilities :
1. A heated open cot or a covered incubator to maintain the right body temperature of babies.
2. To help with breathing - Ventilators
3. Machines to give administered amounts of fluids and medicines to the babies
4. Monitors attached to the babies with cords to measure heart rate, breathing and the amount of oxygen in their blood.
5. special cooling beds which help babies to reduce brain injuries who have had a difficult birth.
6. Other machines to provide babies with treatment under lights, or phototherapy in case of Jaundice.
7. Machines to monitor brain functions.
8. X-ray and Ultra-sound machines
Specialized Doctors for Neonatal Care - Neonatologists
NICUs function under the supervision of neonatologists. These specially trained doctors are Paediatricians first and then further have taken specialized training as Neonatologists.
Mostly NICUs have many neonatologists. There is a round the clock neonatologist on duty or call with whom parents of the baby can speak to in case of any queries or concerns.
