Cooling Caps For Scalp Hypothermia
Scalp Hypothermia is cooling the scalp with cooling caps or cold caps for a certain time period before, after and during each chemotherapy(chemo) treatment to reduce or prevent hair loss.
Cold caps or Cooling caps are tightly fitting helmet like caps filled up with a cooling gel or liquid that are worn during chemo sessions resulting in prevention or reduction of hair loss.
Hypothermia is thought to result from constricting blood vessels in the scalp caused by cooling. In theory, this reduces the amount of chemotherapy that reaches the cells of the hair follicles. Furthermore, the cold reduces the activity of the hair follicles and makes them less attractive to chemo, which targets rapidly dividing cells. By reducing the impact of chemo on follicle cells, this could help prevent or reduce hair loss from the scalp.
Important points to remember while using cold caps :
• Ensure that the caps fit correctly on your head.
• Practice wearing the cap before the first session.
• Be prepared with warm blankets as it might get cold during Scalp hypothermia.
Some of the patients may face side effects while using cold caps like neck and shoulder discomfort, scalp pain, forehead pain, dizziness, nausea etc.
While going through Chemotherapy and using cold caps one needs to be extra gentle with his or her hair to prevent damage and help maintain hair quality. It is highly recommended that you use a gentle, high quality shampoo comb and brush gently. Avoid dyeing the hair until three months after chemotherapy is done. Also avoid using blow dryers, hot rollers, and straightening irons.
And the most important factor to consider during the whole treatment is cost.
Earlier older types of cool caps were not covered by insurance. It is still not very clear that the use of newer, computer-controlled cool caps will be covered by insurance either. Do not forget to check with your insurance company to see what might be covered before starting your treatment.
